About Postgres Consulting Services delivered by Science Tools Corporation Introducing Postgres Consulting Services Our History: In 1994, Professor Michael Stonebraker, who created the Postgres RDBMS, invited Science Tools' founder, Richard Troy, to lead a research project for him within U.C. Berkeley's Electronics Research Laboratory. Funded by NASA, the project was designed to solve major data and systems integration issues for earth science researchers. Because the Postgres research project was mature but still ongoing in the same offices, he chose to harness the Postgres system. Richard and his team built "University BigSur," the world's first grid computing system by "hacking the brains" of Postgres, getting it to run arbitrary code when desired, and in so doing provide an implementation capable of performing "the query from hell." Since that time, virtually all of Science Tools' technical talent has come up through the ranks of Relational Database Engines, with a heavy emphasis on Postgres, especially following the company's choice of PostgreSql as the standard platform in 2004. You can learn more about Science Tools' history here. History of Consulting at Science ToolsWhen Science Tools first commercialized University BigSur, the business always involved a large "customization" effort, which was, in effect, consulting services. Because of BigSur's meta-data-focused architecture, there was a heavy emphasis on database work. The first supported database system was Informix's UDS (and various permutations). Founder Richard Troy then wrote an SQL Dialect translation engine and soon thereafter the system supported five RDBMSes, including:
Later Ingres and other RDBMSes were added. In 2005, Science Tools realized that Postgres had come far enough along and standardized on the PostgreSql platform. From that point forward, Science Tools' overall database emphasis has been on PostgreSql. Continuing ForwardScience Tools has moved forward with specialized services for the PostgreSql community. For example, through the introduction of Binary Replication, we have provided various leading-edge fail-over scripts and other tools and utilities for our customers to help them manage large, mission critical applications. In addition, we have created a "Consultant's Handbook" which helps all our consultants deliver top quality services by providing at their fingertips our own internal bible with tips, hints, and directions for addressing all manner of PostgreSql issues - we believe we are the only firm providing Postgres Consulting Services to do so!
