Our Engineering Facility We occasionally invite guests to our engineering facility in Oakland, and we occasionally host an open-house there as well; the following will help you find us.
About the Location Our Engineering facility is what some people call a 'loft'; it's zoned 'light industrial'. The parcel was a part of the original Oakland Airport, before it was moved out into the Bay, and 1 World-War 1 era double-wide quansit hut which was an aircraft hangar remains and now serves as a wood-working workshop. Our structure, one of seven on the parcel, was originally a machine shop working in support of Alison's Marine Division during World-War II. It has no street frontage is very nearly completely hidden from view from the street, so it can be very hard to find. The Area is all industrial. Within a block or so, there are 8 hotels, a CA Department of Motor Vehicles office, the Oakland SPCA office, the Just Deserts confection manufacturing plant, a few automotive related businesses, etc. If walking from the Coliseum BART station, the best route passes two labor union halls, a Safeway operated Pak-N-Save, and the Oakland SPCA. This location is behind ASE Automotive (an automotive repair facility which has street frontage), and our front entrance is via a hallway whose entrance is in the corner of the parking lot immediately east (right as you face it) of ASE Automotive. Our neighbor toward Enterprise Way is a wire-rope facility. Across the street is a Just Deserts pastery baking facility. We have only one parking place in front, usually occupied, and we have as much as we might require around back. The Entrance The entrance can be difficult to find. We and 6 neighbors share a single 30' wide gate serving a driveway on the north side of the street. ASE Automotive, notable for its lit sign, is just west (toward Enterprise Way) from our driveway, and just a little more west is West Coast Wire Rope. There's a small sign pronouncing the gate serves 613 - 625. Just inside the gate, on the left, there is a tree at the apex of a "parking triangle", and in the far corner, a door. That door opens to a hallway which serves our front door, ASE Automotive's back door, and a private music studio. Our front door is protected by an interior gate in the hallway so that in the summer months we can have airflow without having uninvited individuals just walk in. One of our neighbors can open or close the outer gate at any time, though it's supposed to remain open during week-day business hours. If it's closed, adventuresome folk can perhaps squeeze through, but a better plan is to call us at the number above, or try our neighbor, ASE, to see if they can let you through. Around the block on Hegenberger there are a host of convenience stores and gas stations from which to find a phone, should you need one. Please use the doorbell! It's the middle one. If the outer door is open, 613 is at the end of the hall on the right, but we may not hear your knocking - use the bell! Also note that sometimes we are in the back and can't hear the bell either since the property goes back a total of 168'. We will soon be setting up a second bell way in the back but until then, your choices are:
>>back to top<< Parking During business hours, please either use the space explicitly marked 613, or please park around back. Please do not park in a numbered space! Please do not block anyone in! Parking outside of "normal business hours" and on weekends is available in the Nutri-Slim parking spaces as they are closed. Also, we have a lot of parking around back inside our fenced in gate - get us to let you in, or if you're familiar, just let yourself into the gate and hoof it around to the front door. And you can always park on the street. Directions & Map Most visitors will have no problem getting to the area because it's near the Oakland Coliseum and Oakland Airport.
